Closer Examension of the Galleries on Display at Art Basel Hong Kong 2024

The 2024 Art Basel Hong Kong has already begun in earnest. An international crowd of art enthusiasts has descended upon Hong Kong, a bustling Asian city, as the international art expo makes an appearance.

Hypebeast was present at Art Basel to take in the 242 galleries from 40 different countries, which included booths from David Zwirner, Victoria Miro, Hauser & Wirth, Gagosian, Perrotin, and Pace Gallery. Local galleries such as 10 Chancery Lane Gallery featured works by Laurent Martin “Lo” and Katrina Leigh Mendoza Raimann, while international galleries such as Tomio Koyama Gallery had pieces by Aiko Yuno.

Classics like the spotted pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama and the acrylic paintings on canvas known as “Infinity Nets (2015)” were legendary Basel must-sees. At Victoria Miro, one of the Japanese designer’s most intriguing pieces was on display. Her “Where the Lights in My Heart Go (2016)” mirror polished stainless steel with glass mirror piece was a much talked about experience. For a set thirty seconds, guests were literally placed within a metal cage that was filled with mirrors and lighting that created the illusion of an endless, open area.

Other artists showcasing their work at Basel include Simon Fujiwara, whose signature mouse character is spray-painted on canvas; Javier Calleja, whose paintings and sculptures have big eyes and resemble cartoon characters; Kenny Scharf, whose work is mesmerizing; and a life-sized Hajime Sorayama robot. The Matthew Marks Gallery, Almine Riche, PTT Space, Gallery 1957, and other galleries are among those having exhibitions at Basel.

Art Basel is open to visitors in Hong Kong through the end of this week.
