The Impact of Community Boilers: Reducing Emissions and Fostering Sustainability

“Take a step towards sustainability, promote Community Boilers” – Vishal S. Bhudia, M.D. at Steam House

New Delhi (India), May 12: Steam boiler industry in India has been a significant contributor to the country’s economic growth. With the growth of industries such as power generation, oil and gas, and chemical, the demand for steam boilers has increased substantially. However, steam boilers are one of the significant contributors to air pollution in India.

Steam boilers emit various pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate matter (PM). These pollutants can cause respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer, among other health hazards. The emissions from steam boilers have a significant impact on the environment, including air pollution, acid rain, and global warming.

To reduce the emissions from steam boilers, community boilers have emerged as a sustainable solution. Community boilers are centralized boilers that are installed in a central location to provide steam to multiple buildings. Community boilers are designed to be highly efficient and emit significantly lower pollutants compared to individual steam boilers. The centralized location of community boilers enables better control and monitoring of emissions, which can be beneficial in reducing pollution. Community boilers are designed to run on alternate fuels which will not only reduce harmful emissions but will also reduce the economies spent on coal by the industries. The use of biomass as fuel can also provide a sustainable solution to India’s energy needs, as it reduces the dependence on fossil fuels.

Steamhouse India Limited is a leading community steam-generating company in India that provides steam as a service to various industries through a distributed pipeline network. Group company commissioned our first community steam generation unit in Sachin GIDC, Gujarat, India, in 2014, and have expanded our steam generation units since then. Currently, we have seven existing projects, including two functioning projects in Sachin, one in Vapi, two in Ankleshwar, one in Sarigam, and one in Dahej. Additionally, we also have four under-construction projects in areas including Nandesari, Dahej, Panoli, and Tarapur.

Our community boilers are equipped with the best-in-class technology, with efficiency ranging from 75%-83%. We use fossil fuels such as coal and non-fossil fuels such as biomass briquettes as raw materials in the production of steam. We are also in the process of using alternative sources of fuel such as agro-waste, municipal solid waste RDF, non-recyclable industrial solid waste as raw materials in the production of steam.

We strive to install boilers that can use alternate fuel to promote sustainability and eliminate the usage of fossil fuels. Depending on the availability of alternate fuel in a given sector, we have reduced our fugitive emission by using scientific and automatic handling of coal and the coal ash-controlled movement and storage of coal. We have also reduced our air pollution by nearly 80%. www.steamhouse.in
