The Australian rock legends Goanna will trade AFL stages for Tassie stages

Australian rockers Goanna are back to celebrate their multi-platinum, ground-breaking debut album “Spirit of Place,” which changed music forever forty years ago and is still relevant today.

The Goanna Band, an Australian rock group, was founded in Geelong in 1977 and features guitarist and vocalist Shane Howard as its cornerstone.

For the Telstra Half-Time Entertainment at today’s Toyota AFL Grand Final, Goanna will perform as a super group alongside First Nations musicians Christine Anu, Emma Donovan, Tasman Keith, and William Barton.

The Toyota AFL Grand Final will return to the MCG for the first time since 2019 with the Goanna super group performing with Katie Noonan, The Temper Trap, Budjerah, Ngaiire, Mike Brady AM, G Flip, Robbie Williams, and a host of soon-to-be launched Australian music talents.

Performing at the MCG, according to frontman Shane Howard, is an emotional roller coaster.

“It’s thrilling, exciting, and horrifying all at once. Both the audience and stage are very large. But it will be fantastic, “added he.

“There is a tonne of amazing talent here, both established and up-and-coming. It’s incredible to have these talented musicians on stage with you.”

Following their performance tonight, according to Mr. Howard, they will hit the road again and arrive at Launceston’s Princess Theatre on October 7.

Goanna hasn’t visited Tasmania since roughly 1987, so we are eager to return to one of our favourite destinations in the nation, he said.

Early in the 1980s, during the peak of Aussie Rock, Goanna contributed to the creation of a new Australian identity.

Before Midnight Oil and Paul Kelly addressed related concerns, the legendary song “Solid Rock” ignited a flame for Indigenous rights that hasn’t died and the environmental movement’s anthem “Let The Franklin Flow” served as a rallying cry.

Shane Howard, Rose Bygrave, Marcia Howard, Graham Davidge, and special guests Clarie Anne Taylor and Russell Smith aboard Yidaki set out on a new adventure in 2022.

Honoring the timeless chants of the Goannas while rekindling their spirit.
