Sergey Tokarev talks about how Reface grabbed 50 million downloads so quickly

Sergey Tokarev, the investor of RefaceAI, expressed his views on the phenomenal success of Reface, formerly known as Doublicat, all across the world. Reface has surpassed 50 million downloads on App Store and Google Play within a year of its release. It is currently among the top apps on Play Store and Google Play at the global level.

A short Bio of RefaceAI

The development company of Reface was originally founded in 2011 as NeoCortext. Later on, the development team started working on the development of its own face replacement technology based on an artificial learning algorithm. After the successful development of RefaceAI technology, the company changed its name from NeoCortext to RefaceAI. “The team has gone through a long and difficult way. During this time, the company has accumulated enough experience to become a leader in the area,” said Sergey Tokarev.

The Success Journey of Reface

RefaceAI launched Reface, as Doublicat, on January 13, 2020. The app reached 1 million downloads in the first few months. After six months of its launch, the app surpassed the 5 million downloads mark. The company said in mid-August that Reface had left various giants including Zoom, YouTube, TikTok, and Amazon behind in a number of countries. It achieved the milestone of 20 million downloads by the end of August. On September 7, the app had more than 35 million users. The app has reached the number 1 position in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and many other countries. Sergey Tokarev noted, “The number of the app downloads has already exceeded 50 million.”

RefaceAI Technology

Sergey Tokarev said that the unique technology used in Reface was one of the main reasons behind the exceptional success of it. Reface works on the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) technology. The competitors of Reface mostly use CGI technology. The GAN technology is much better than the CGI technology in terms of quality, image/video processing time, and realism. “You don’t need to be a professional in video processing or have any expensive equipment to do with high quality what was previously possible to do only for months and exclusively by experts,” said Tokarev.

The Ability of Reface to Attract Celebrities

Reface has managed to attract not only ordinary users but also famous artists and celebrities internationally. Currently, the app has been used by Jennifer Lopez, Dua Lipa, Britney Spears, and Snoop Dog. These celebrities refaced their images by using the Reface app and shared the results on their social media accounts. RefaceAI worked with Ukrainian singer Jerry Heil to produce a video, #Blogger. This video was mainly created by using face replacement technology. The famous media outlets including Forbes, Mashable, and VICE mentioned the Reface app almost 600 times so far. 65% of the users post the images and videos created in Reface on their social media accounts, according to Tokarev.

The Future Prospects of RefaceAI

Sergey Tokarev also noted the future plans of the company, “At the moment, only about a tenth of the potential of our technology is in the public domain.” The company is working on the development of software that could determine the authenticity of the videos due to the rising concerns about the misuse of technology. The company aims to attract 100M new subscribers in the coming years. It is planning to release a video editor, Reface Studio, to allow the users to process synthesized videos fast. RefaceAI is also working on the development of an app, Full Body Swap, that will allow the users to swap the whole body in images and videos.
