From Puerto Rico’s Boxing Roots to the World Stage: Joey Borrero’s Mission Beyond the Ring

In boxing, talent can open doors, but character is what keeps fighters moving forward when the spotlight fades. For Joey “El Hijo de Dios” Borrero, success has never been measured solely by victories. It has been built through faith, family, and an unwavering commitment to becoming the best version of himself inside and outside the ring.

Born in Las Vegas and raised in Puerto Rico, Borrero was introduced to boxing through a family deeply connected to the sport. Raised by his grandparents, Juan “Popo” Guzmán and Juana Elisa Monserate, he grew up surrounded by stories of Puerto Rican boxing greatness. His grandfather’s work as a cutman alongside legendary champion Félix “Tito” Trinidad offered a firsthand glimpse into the discipline and sacrifice required to compete at the highest level.
Inspired by those experiences, Borrero developed a passion for boxing at a young age. He built a strong amateur foundation through more than 60 fights, gaining valuable experience before making the jump to the professional ranks in 2019. Since then, he has become known for an aggressive, crowd-pleasing style that combines relentless pressure with fight-ending power.

A defining moment arrived when Borrero traveled to Mexico and captured the ABF Championship. The achievement highlighted his ability to perform away from home and demonstrated the confidence of a fighter willing to test himself wherever opportunities arise.

While his performances inside the ropes continue to attract attention, Borrero’s identity extends far beyond boxing. Competing under the nickname “El Hijo de Dios,” he openly embraces the Christian faith that serves as the foundation of his life and career. His message consistently emphasizes perseverance, gratitude, and purpose—qualities that resonate with supporters who see him as more than just another rising contender.

His growing reputation received another boost in Puerto Rico, where he earned a notable victory while receiving encouragement from boxing icons Félix Trinidad and Iván Calderón. For a fighter proud of his heritage, recognition from two of the island’s most respected champions carried special significance.

Now training and living in Colorado, Borrero remains focused on his long-term goal of becoming a world champion. The next step in that pursuit comes on June 19 at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California, where he faces David “Dynamite” Lopez in an eight-round welterweight contest scheduled to stream on DAZN.

As his career continues to gain momentum, Joey Borrero represents a blend of old-school determination and modern ambition. With every fight, he carries the lessons of his family, the pride of Puerto Rico, and the faith that has guided him from the beginning—proving that true success is built on far more than punches and trophies.
