Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross, Brazil’s highest civilian honor, on Tuesday while on a state visit, marking a major diplomatic victory. This is Prime Minister Modi’s third international honor since he took office in 2014 and the third of his current five-nation tour, which began on July 2.
The honor highlights the expanding strategic and diplomatic alliance between the two nations, particularly in fields such as technology, trade, climate action, and South-South collaboration.
Prime Minister Modi is visiting Brazil as part of a larger diplomatic journey that also includes high-level meetings with Caribbean and Latin American leaders.Among the prime minister’s engagements are bilateral agreements, cultural exchanges, and strategic discussions aimed at strengthening India’s relations with partner nations throughout the world.
After being conferred the honour Prime Minister Modi said, “I would like to thank President Lula for the warm welcome. Today is a proud and emotional moment not just for me, but also for 140 crore Indians, as I have been conferred with Brazil’s highest civilian honour. I would like to express my gratitude towards him, the Government of Brazil, and the people of Brazil.”
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva welcomed the Indian Prime Minister to Brasilia’s Alvorada Palace with full military honors and a royal ceremonial guard of 114 horses.
Under the BRICS platform, the two leaders held confidential and delegation-level discussions about bilateral trade, defense cooperation, climate change, and multilateral connections. There were also press statements and a state lunch in honor of Prime Minister Modi prior to the signing of significant agreements between Brazil and India.
