After emailing employees at Tesla about job cuts, Elon Musk says the company’s total headcount will increase.

After sending emails about pay cuts for salaried employees, Tesla CEO Elon Musk seems to have retracted his statement in a tweet on Saturday, saying that the number of salaried employees would not change much.

Twitter account @WholeMarsBlog tweeted that the number of Tesla will increase in the next 12 months.

Musk replied that the total number of Tesla’s employees would increase, but that salaried employees “should be fairly flat.”

Musk did not specify whether existing salaried employees would become hourly employees or whether new employees would be hired at Tesla.

Musk said he had “extremely bad feelings” about the economy in an email titled “Pause All Hiring Worldwide” sent to Tesla officials on Friday. As a result, Musk said he would have to cut 10% of his salaried staff, Reuters reported.

Musk wrote that the number of Tasika employees at Tesla would increase. The Tesla CEO said the memo did not apply to anyone “building a car, packing batteries or installing solar panels,” Reuters reported.

Two days earlier, Musk had sent a memo to his executives urging them to return to office or resign, Electric reported.

Tesla employed 100,000 people at the end of last year, according to SEC filings.

A Tesla spokesman did not immediately return calls for comment.
