Philanthropist Ann Lesley Smith Is Redefining What an Arabian Horse Ranch Can Be
A horse ranch is often defined by the work that takes place there: breeding, training, riding for sport, cleaning and maintaining the grounds, and competition. However, philanthropist and former radio host Ann Lesley Smith knew that, as she entered her seventies, her sprawling estate among the vineyards and rolling hills of California’s wine country had a greater purpose. The personal vision for transformative healing was inspired by her prized Arabian horse, Amir Fadjur Salaam.
“I know from experience that horse ranches can be a place of peace and renewal,” says Smith.
Smith’s California ranch, initially built for her late husband, mogul and musician Chester Smith, has become a place of refuge for her after some ups and downs in her own life. She has learned how transformative time in nature and time with her purebred Arabian horse, Amir, can be. Now, she is allowing other people into that world. At a time that often feels hopelessly divided, frustratingly synthetic, and busier than many people can handle, Smith has offered a respite driven by the unique empathetic qualities of her horse.
A horse at the center of a mission
Amir Fadjur Salaam comes from a long line of celebrated Arabian horses. His bloodline is directly connected to The Fabulous Fadjur, a famous Arabian who was not only award-winning but also carried the same human-like empathy and ability to listen and respond that Amir has. These are qualities that have been life-changing for Smith.
“You can see it in his eyes; he really understands you, sometimes even without you having to speak,” Smith explains. “He picks up on subtle cues.”
It was this ability that inspired Smith to open her California estate to others in the first place. She understood that there were precious few times in life that people could experience true authenticity and empathy.
“Being among the free-roaming Arabians, and Amir especially, can be life-changing for people,” she says.
Through Amir, Smith has developed a greater purpose: reimagining her horse ranch as a place for meaningful encounters with nature. A place where an animal’s presence can be an invitation to pay attention, regulate one’s pace, and learn to approach others with greater empathy and a sense of peace.
Arabian stallions and historic legacies inspire renewal and calmness
Arabian horses have long been treated as more than just simple beasts of burden by their caretakers. From the time they were bred by Bedouin tribes thousands of years ago, they have been seen as a unique breed, prized not only for their beauty and strength but also for their intelligence and ability to forge close relationships with their human caretakers. Over time, Arabian horses learned how to respond to unspoken human cues, becoming unusually perceptive and emotionally resonant.
These qualities have become the bedrock of the work Smith is hoping to do, not only at her California estate but for the world at large. She views Amir as an “Ambassador of Peace”: an animal that can help bridge divides and bring about a greater sense of empathy in the world.
“Arabian horses were traditionally given as gifts symbolizing goodwill,” Smith explains. It is a legacy she wants to protect and renew.
It is a strikingly analog approach to communication during a time when AI development and online interactions seem to take precedence over true, down-to-earth connection.
“You can’t rush a meaningful encounter with a horse like Amir,” says Smith. “It is a connection that must be earned. But once it is, it is authentic. That can be difficult to replicate with today’s synthetic technology systems, and I think it is something many people could benefit from.”
A deep connection beyond tradition
Smith’s idea to open her estate to those seeking refuge and reconnection with nature goes beyond the traditional idea of what a “horse ranch” is to most people. While competition, pedigree, and breeding have long been standard in equestrian life, Smith is hoping to disrupt the space in her own unique way, offering an authentic connection to nature and to the animal world that is emotional and restorative.
By offering an alternative to the “always-on” lifestyle many people live today, Smith is bringing people serenity and balance, even if they have no prior experience with horses. She is not abandoning the traditional ideals of horse ranch life; rather, she is helping redefine the role of horses in modern society. Along with caring for the animals and stewardship of the land surrounding her estate, Smith is offering a broader invitation: come in, slow down, and discover what a quiet connection with an animal as special as Amir can do for the soul.
